January is Mental Wellness Month

Mental Wellness Month

The holidays are over and although it is nice to have the hustle and bustle behind you, it can still be a struggle to mentally feel your best. January is a great time to recharge. Studies prove that mental health significantly impacts your physical health. In fact, positive mental health (along with other factors) can reduce your risk of heart attack and other serious conditions. It also boosts your immune system, which is especially beneficial this time of year!

So, what can you do to strengthen your mind-body connection?

Balance Emotions

Identify and address any emotional changes, acknowledge your feelings, take a deep breath when overwhelmed and practice mindfulness (exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, positive self-talk, etc).

Find Purpose

This can be identified through your career, a hobby, family and more! Having a sense of purpose helps make you happier, healthier, sleep better and live longer. A passion or zest for life can allow you to focus on what really matters in life.

Make YOU a Priority

This applies to your physical AND mental health. Eat healthy, take advantage of wellness screenings with your doctor, get plenty of rest and manage stress before it becomes long-term and negatively affects your health.

Here are some ideas to make a difference while celebrating Mental Wellness Month:

  1. Your words and actions hold power. If they can help even one person struggling, you've won!

  2. Volunteer at a shelter, library or food bank.

  3. Start a gratitude journal.

  4. Learn a new hobby.

  5. Practice self-care with someone who is struggling with mental illness (manicure/pedicure, movie night, cooking session, fitness class, etc...)

  6. Listen to mental wellness podcasts and share/discuss what you learn to spread awareness.

  7. Start the conversation. Break the stigma by asking tough questions if you notice someone struggling and be the bridge that connects them to the help they need.
